Sciatica Q & A

What is sciatica?

Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated due to a compressed nerve in the lower spine. When that happens, you’ll feel shooting pain from the lower back to just below the knee. The sciatic nerve travels across most of the body and is responsible for sensation.

There are two kinds of sciatica:

  • Acute
  • Chronic

Sciatica is not a condition rather a symptom of sciatic nerve damage.

What causes sciatica?

The leading causes of sciatica include:

  • A sports injury
  • Herniated disc
  • Narrow canals in the spine
  • Narrowing of canals in the spine
  • Stress fracture

A herniated disc is the most common cause of sciatica. When the disc bulges or ruptures, its walls weaken and can compress nerves more easily, leading to severe pain and sciatic damage.

What are the symptoms of sciatica?

If you’re suffering from sciatica, you’ll inevitably exhibit the following symptoms:

  • Numbness along the nerve in the leg
  • Tingling feet and toes
  • Severe or shooting pain in leg

Symptoms vary in intensity according to the individual, but also according to their daily activities. For example, if you spend long periods of time seated, you’re more likely to feel more severe pain along the back of the leg.

What is the most effective treatment for sciatica?

The doctors at Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine provide expert treatments for sciatica. Rather than opt for many prescriptions, they’re committed to finding the most holistic, noninvasive solution to sciatic pain.

One treatment option is the Cox Flexion Distraction Technique, a non-surgical spinal adjustment that contributes to the restoration of joint and muscle motion.

The Cox Flexion Distraction Technique applies pressure on targeted areas of the back to realign the spine, with the intention of decompressing your discs by gently stretching the lower spine. This is a highly effective anti-inflammatory technique.

Other treatments for sciatica include:

  • Walking or light stretching
  • Hot/cold compression
  • Physical therapy
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy

Nobody enjoys waking up with morning stiffness or being unable to walk to the local grocery store without feeling debilitating pain. It’s essential to protect the small activities that make up your daily life.

Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine can help you find effective and practical solutions to managing and resolving sciatic pain. Call or book an appointment online today to find out what treatments are the most suitable for you.
