Scarring Q & A

What causes scars to form?

Scars form as a reaction to an injury to your skin. When your skin is healing, it sends special proteins to the area to help rebuild and repair the injury, and sometimes the new skin doesn’t quite match the old skin, leading to a scar.

There are four main types of scars:

  • Acne scars resulting from acne
  • Hypertrophic scars - a raised red scar from an injury
  • Keloid scars - tough, irregularly shaped scars from the overproduction of scar tissue
  • Contracture scars -  tightened skin, occurs most after a burn

What is the Icon Aesthetic System?

The Icon Aesthetic System is an advanced laser treatment the team at Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine uses to treat a number of aesthetic concerns, including reducing the appearance of scar tissue, rejuvenating your skin for a more youthful appearance, and laser removal of unwanted hair.

The laser system is equipped with specialized programs and attachments so the team can provide targeted treatment for any skin type or color without discomfort.

How can the Icon laser improve scar tissue?

The Icon laser uses heat energy to break up the scar tissue and rejuvenate the skin under your scar by stimulating the production of collagen, which can help make the skin smooth and pliable to improve appearance.

The team at Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine use the 1540 fractional laser attachment to help improve scar appearance, along with the XF Microlens for fast treatment and the XD Microlens to penetrate the skin deep under your scar tissue.

Scar laser treatment causes little discomfort, but the team at Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine may use a numbing agent to improve your comfort level during treatment.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment time varies depending on the size and depth of your scar. The team at Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine provide a personalized treatment plan so you know what to expect before laser therapy starts.

Laser treatment for scar tissue may require a number of treatments to get the best results. This too will be part of your treatment plan.

You may notice an improvement in the appearance of your scar shortly after laser treatment, but it may take up to four months for you to see the full effects.

Whether for acne or surgical scars, the team at Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine can help improve appearance. Call the location nearest you or book an appointment online today.
