Deeana Burr talks about some conditions that can be treated with PRP, or platelet rich plasma, here in our Summerville and Mount Pleasant, SC offices. At Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine, we offer a free consultation to discuss if this treatment option is right for you.

Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is a revolutionary treatment approach that focuses on healing conditions as opposed to simply masking them. The goal is to use the body’s own tools and resources to expedite the healing process or to prompt the body to heal itself when it is otherwise unable to. In recent years there have been rapid developments in the use of the body’s own cells for accelerated healing of soft tissue injuries to reduce the pain and affects associates with osteoarthritis (OA). Previously, treatment options were limited to pain prescriptions or surgery.

What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?

Human blood is comprised of plasma, red and white blood cells, and platelets. Each plays a vital role throughout the body. While platelets are usually associated with clotting, they contain numerous growth and healing factors that initiate the body’s healing response. Platelets function as the body’s natural reservoir for multiple growth and healing components that are naturally found in blood and are essential in the repair of injured tissue. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that PRP injections have improved function and decreased pain in a wide variety of ailments.

Results

A review of ten Level 1 trials of patients with knee osteoarthritis found that platelet-rich plasma injections provided more pain relief and better functional outcomes than hyaluronic 12 months after injection. This led to the associate Editor of the Arthroscopy journal to state, “The time has come for those of us who have not yet tried platelet-rich plasma injections in our patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis to do so.”

How Do Results Compare To Steroid Injections?

For tendons, PRP has been shown to offer better clinical outcomes when compared to corticosteroid injection in pain reduction and improved function for both lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow) and plantar fasciitis 24 months after injection.

How Do You Get The Platelets?

We draw a nominal amount of blood and use a centrifuge to separate and isolate the blood cells. Our clinic uses the Genius Concentration System for the preparation of PRP concentrate. The efficacy of this latest technology is not only much faster than other available systems, but has been shown to retain a statistically significant greater number of the cells that are beneficial to the healing process than other systems on the market. More = Better!

Treatment

Before any treatment there will be an initial consultation to discuss whether regenerative medicine is the right approach for you. Regenerative medicine treatments such as PRP injections have been proven to be safe with a low complication rate; however they may not work for everyone or may not be covered by insurance. As part of your consultation, we will complete a physical evaluation and review of your medical records. The chances of achieving a successful outcome increase through patient selection, and patient education.
