Relief For Knee Pain

Your knees are the two largest joints in your body, and they are incredibly complex. When knee pain is caused by poor alignment, muscle imbalance, or poor stabilization, knee rehabilitation may be used to build up your surrounding muscles and improve flexibility. This, in turn, takes some of the pressure off of the joint to help eliminate some to all of the discomfort.

Our healthcare team knows that all of our patients are different, which is why we customize your rehabilitation program to address your specific needs and concerns.

Therapies We Use

  • Joint mobilization
  • Joint manipulation
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Manual therapy
  • Home exercise programs that allow the patient to expedite the healing process.

Relieve Pain and Prevent Future Recurrence

When damage has occurred to a joint over a long period of time, arthritic changes can alter the mobility and function of the joint space itself. This condition, called Osteoarthritis, responds especially well to our integrative approach.

  • Viscosupplementation Injections
  • Knee Pain Relief Treatments
  • Non-Steroidal Joint Injections

Non-Steroidal Injections

If you have osteoarthritis (OA) that affects your knees, hyaluronic acid injections could help ease your pain and stiffness. These injections help lubricate the joint and as a result, alleviate pain. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance present in the synovial fluid of your joints. Inside a normal knee, synovial fluid is produced – a thick gel-like liquid that helps cushion your joint and absorb the shock of walking, running, twisting, and turning. People with (OA) of the knee have lower levels of hyaluronic acid in their synovial fluid. Therefore, their joints are less lubricated and less able to protect the bones and cartilage from damage and wear.

Our natural knee therapy helps decrease the inflammation within the joint space and eases pain without surgery.

Viscosupplementation, a popular treatment for OA of the knee, injects hyaluronic acid (also called hyaluron and hyaluronate) into the affected knee in order to return mobility to the joint. Supplements and medication that are traditionally used to treat knee pain or arthritis can help reduce some inflammation and pain, however do not address the decreased amounts of fluid in the joint itself. The treatment consists of a series of injections given directly to your knee joints. This therapy works by improving the lubrication in your knees, your pain is then reduced through this therapy by replacing the lost synovial liquid that normally keeps the knees lubricated. When the hyaluronic acid is injected directly to your joints, you will feel a relief from pain and other bad knee symptoms and can even bring your active lifestyle back.

FAQ | Knee Pain

What Causes Knee Pain?2019-01-09T11:14:25-05:00

A variety of factors may contribute to knee pain, though it typically stems from a combination of lifestyle choices and your medical condition. Some of the leading causes of knee pain include:

Knee pain can come from four different types of arthritic conditions:

  • Septic arthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Gout

Many heavy hitters suffer from injuries during practice and, as a result, suffer from knee pain. If done improperly, physical activity can severely damage the ligaments and tendons surrounding the knee, leaving you with pain for days on end. These injuries include, but are not limited to:

  • ACL
  • Fractures
  • Tendinitis

Joint problems

The following joint issues can lead to severe knee pain:

  • Iliotibial syndrome
  • Kneecap dislocation
  • Improper walking due to pain in other parts of the body
  • Cartilage or bone breakage

Obesity and being overweight can also trigger knee pain, due to the added pressure the extra weight is putting on your knees.

The team of doctors at Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine help you maintain a healthy diet and weight to reduce the risks of joint issues and arthritis, and, in turn, of experiencing knee pain.

What Are The Symptoms Of Knee Pain?2019-01-09T11:15:31-05:00

Knee pain is typically never a standalone sensation. That means that it’s almost always a symptom of another injury or illness. Nevertheless, there are specific ways of identifying whether the pain is coming from your knee, including:

  • Stiffness
  • Redness and tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Crunching or popping sounds
  • Weaknesses
  • Inability to straighten the knee
When Should You See Doctor For Knee Pain?2019-01-09T11:16:51-05:00

The team at Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine recommend that you make an appointment as soon as possible if you’re experiencing knee pain.

Though you are the best arbiter for determining how much pain is too much pain, the practice’s doctors can help determine whether the pain you’re feeling is related to a larger, more severe condition.

They’ll then develop an individualized treatment plan to get rid of the pain.

What Are Common Knee Procedures?2019-01-09T11:17:52-05:00

The most common knee procedures typically involve knee replacement surgery — either partial, total or revision. The doctors at Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine are committed to providing alternatives to knee replacement surgery.

One such alternative is viscosupplementation treatment. A hyaluronic acid solution called Sarapin® is injected directly into the affected area to decrease pain and improve mobility. Hyaluronic acid is typically found in the cartilage and acts as a lubricant and shock absorber.

These injections might require multiple visits to Atlantic Coast Physical Medicine, but keep in mind that they are successful alternatives to surgical procedures, which can lead to numerous complications, including:

  • Prolonged and painful recovery
  • Allergic reactions
  • Damage to surrounding areas
  • Infections
  • Stiffness and limited range of motion
  • Scarring
